Non-Renewable Resources in Bangladesh

Part-2
#naturalgas
There are 27 natural gas fields discovered in Bangladesh. Majority of gas fields are situated in eastern part of the country due to having vast quantities of folded structures which is indispensable for trapping and accumulating gas in the subsurface.
- Titas gas is the largest gas field with recoverable reserve 7.58 Tcf where a total of 4.85 Tcf (64.05%) gas already has been recovered until March, 2020.
-Bhola North is latest discovered gas field in Bangladesh with  700 Bcf initial reserve.
1Tcf=1000 Bcf (Billion cubic feet)
#Source Rock
The major source rock is shale dominated Jenum Formation in Barail Group and Eocene Kopili Shales. Gondwana coal also is found as a source rock.

#Reservior Rock
Middle to late Miocene age Sandstones are the major source rock where porosity almost 5-25% and permeability 0.5-490mD. Sylhet Limestone is the potential reservoir rock in Bangladesh.
#Trap
Mostly gas fields have structural trap that is folded anticline. However, Recently stratigraphical trap is also discovered including Rupganj and Bhola North Gas fields by  #BAPEX (Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited).
#Major Concern
The probable natural gas reserves is 27.12 Tcf where almost 14.24 Tcf gas has been consumed and remaining gas (12.88 Tcf) would be finished within 10-12 years until new gas fields will discover. Only two gas fields (Kutubdia and Sangu) have discovered in the offshore. So, the government should much pay attention to explore new gas field in the offshore in order to meets the growing demands of natural gas.
