Non-Renewable Resources in Bangladesh
Part-4
#oilfield
Oil is the mixture of #hydrocarbons (C5-C60 in length) that remains in liquid phase in underground while producing at the normal surface conditions.
Although Bangladesh is a gas rich province, it has not found remarkable oil field. The discovery only one commercial oil field is #Haripur oil field in 1986 with reserve 10 million barrels (recoverable reserve 1.7-2 million barrels).
#Oil productions started in January 1987 and was suspended in 1994 because of decline of oil flow and excessive watert output where the cumulative production was about 0.56 million barrel.
#Source rock
Mainly Shale source rock in Jenum Formation (Barail Group) of Oligocene age. #Depth (6000-7000m)
#Type of organic matter
1. Mainly Humic type (woody terrestrial source or Type-III) is suitable for gas.
2. Minor Sapropelic (woody and marine or type-II) is fit for gas and waxy oil.
3. Type-I (marine algal) is rare which is perfect for oil generation.
#Reservior Rock
Predominantly sandstone in Surma Group (Bokabil and Bhuban Formation) along with good to very good quality. #depth (2000-3000m).
#Trap
Folded structures i.e Anticline, often accompanied by fault.
#seal or cap rock
Shale layer above the sand reservoir.
#Factors for not founding oil
1. Temperature
2. Technical
3. Economical
#Potentially of oil
India near to the Sylhet border lies the oil rich Assam Basin to the northeast where a significant number of oil field has been discovered. So, the govt. should take measures to run more exploration and research activities particularly in eastern part, Sundarban mangrove forest area and offshore for oil discovery.
